Recommended Paints

I use primarily Classic Artist Oils and variety of others such as Rembrandt, Winsor Newton, Gamblin, and Michael Harding. Any brand is fine as long as it doesn’t contain too much filler. Bring what you have.

Your paint can be purchased online or at Jerry’s Artarama in Austin.

Recommended colors

These are a must have but if you have other colors feel free to bring them.

• White
• Cad Yellow
• Cad Red or Permanent Red
• Alizarin Permanent or Quinacridone Red
• Ultramarine Blue
• Veridian Green
• Black

Recommended Brushes

I recommend a starter pack of brushes that you can buy online or in person at Jerry’s Artarama in Austin. https://www.jerrysartarama.com/pro-stroke-premium-white-bristle-brush-sets It doesn’t have to be this set, but make sure there is a variety of sizes and shapes in whatever you choose.

Other necessities

• Turpenoid or Gamsol in a covered turp container. Oderless only please!
• Portable easel and palette- I use my Coulter Easel the most but there are a lot of other great sets out there. I like the mini to carry around outside, but if this is also going to be your studio easel you might want to go bigger with the compact or standard. https://artboxandpanel.com/collections/31359
  
  If you already own an easel and palette bring whatever you have. If you are a complete beginner and don’t want to invest in an expensive easel yet there are lots of very inexpensive options out there. Contact me and I might be able to find you something on loan.
• Grey disposable palette paper. I use Grey Matters without the thumb hole
• Small sketch book / inexpensive paint pad for all mediums
• Brush pens in light, medium and dark values
• View finder
• Paper towels
• Photos you have taken and printed out in 8x10 in black and white in color that you want to paint and a clear sheet of paper protector to put it in. Ruler and wet erase marker in red.

Extra colors NOT required

Other colors I use are Hansa Yellow, Indian Yellow (Winsor Newton), Yellow Ochre, Sepia (Rembrandt), and Portland Grey Deep (Gamblin), Quinacridone Violet, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Blue, Phthalo Blue. We will focus on using a fairly limited number of color in each painting but bring any extra colors you already have if you’d like.

Canvas

You can get a 9x12 single flat 1/8th inch #52890 for $5.27 per panel If you already have some painting surfaces you can bring those too.
